Somehow (HOW?!?) the holiday shopping season is upon us all once again. We’ve officially dipped into December, which means it’ll be mere minutes until we celebrate with gifts and food and drink and loved ones. Seems insane to say, but we’re running out of time!
Here at Homeworks, we’re all for keeping our gift lists as local as we can: shopping local during the holiday season has a direct and powerful impact on our own economy. In buying from local businesses, a larger portion of your spending stays within the community, supporting local jobs, services, and infrastructure. Plus, small businesses often reinvest their profits in other local ventures, creating a ripple effect that strengthens the entire SLC economy. In other words? Keep your money circulating within the community rather than leaving it for large corporations or online retailers.
As ever, we’re here to help, so we tapped a few of our agents to get ideas on where to put your dollars for some unique and thoughtful local gifts!
Melissa Lipani: I've been really digging the SLC vintage shops lately. My favorites are The Village, the Old Flamingo, Salt and Honey (which isn't all vintage, but features some great vintage purveyors like Park Street Vintage), Nouve, Oliver and Princess Natasha, and the Post SLC. All of these spots have such fun housewares, barware, furniture, and lighting!
Keni Nelson: Maven District! Stockist! The Urban Flea Market at The Gateway!
Candace Fite: Queen Bee on 25th Street in Ogden or Fiction on Washington (also in Ogden). Local makers, books, and toys. Oh, and Olive & Dahlia…very cute spot.
Camilla Granasen: Love to get stocking fillers at Cahoots Cards & Gifts at 9th & 9th. For seriously gorgeous items for home, body, him, and her, head on up to Park City and Indigo Highway in Newpark area. And while you are up there, stop at 11Hauz, next door, for the best Jamaican food you've ever had.
Leigh Anne Bernal: I have been focusing on giving experiences. Last year, we were gifted a wine tasting event at our house by the Wine Academy of Utah, and we had so much fun. Something like that supports a local business while giving the recipient so many memories. Or try a tour of Salt Lake City like you’ve never experienced by giving the gift of Nightcat Media true crime walking tour. The owner is so funny and knowledgeable—another local entrepreneur that would love to entertain you!
Zach Hansen: Stockist, High West Whiskey, the Utah State Liquor Store (wink), and Cactus & Tropicals
Ross Brookham: Got to shout out Retro Betty—great place for unique, vintage inspired gifts. Tabula Rasa is great too, and they also have the most beautiful wrapping paper.
Liz Elias: Gift certificates to local coffee shops with a bag of beans or a cute mug or t-shirt. Try Loki, Roots, Publik, Cupla, Three Pines, or Culture Coffee.
Jenny Compton: I’ll go with The Heavy Metal Shop. Hoodies, vintage records, pins, posters, and general [good] evil. Or King's English for a good book!
Kayla Bobzien: Central Book Exchange, Mineral & Matter, or Rocky Mountain Mixers (for all the unique cocktail needs)
