We’re big fans over here of maintaining the kind of space that makes you feel good. Of ensuring that your home is uniquely yours (whatever that means for you) and of doing what it takes to keep things interesting, beautiful, and updated. Decluttering is always highly advised—editing the unnecessary, even small items, is a great way to open up your space, both literally and figuratively.
Another VERY powerful way to reignite your love affair with your space? Just give it a little “zhuzh”.
The key, we think, to a successful "zhuzh" is to keep it fresh, but more importantly simple. The point here is to avoid a massive overhaul that will require too much time, effort, or money—this is more about those small but impactful changes that can transform the overall tone and the energy of your space and ensure that you still fall in love every time you walk in your door.
Front Door & Entry
What better (and easier) way to zhuzh your home than to start with the entryway? The first impression of your space, this is kind of where you set the tone…for everything. In Feng Shui, the color of a front door can affect the flow of energy (Chi) into the home, so consider what you choose, both for yourself and your guests. Adding a plant, new rug (or welcome mat) will certainly lend good vibes to everyone who comes in, and for those with an entry hallway, consider elevating the lighting or adding a piece of art or mirror.
Hardware & Fixture Swaps
It may seem small, but refreshing those old cabinet pulls or finally swapping out the bathroom faucet for something more your style (be it a gold swan or a blue single-handle) will make a substantial difference in how you feel about your kitchen or bathroom. We tend to focus on those big-ticket items we want updated in our homes, but if you can’t afford all-new cabinets or a remodel just yet, start here…you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Layered Lighting
This one can (obviously) completely change the feel of a room (and of your home altogether). Been wanting to swap out that flush-mount dome light (AKA “boob light”)? Do it…there are countless affordable options, and you can throw a dimmer switch in for good measure. Add a mix of lighting sources to those areas where you spend the most time. Table and floor lamps can create cozy corners and nice vignettes, string lights can add the playful, romantic mood of a cute restaurant patio, and candles are always the vibe.
Throws & Pillows & Textiles
Consider switching out your throws and pillows for something new or replacing your current bath towels and kitchen linens. If you haven’t traditionally employed bright colors, maybe now’s the time. Determine those hues that add value for you—poppy, moss, cobalt, vermilion, et. al.—based on how you want your home to feel. Or add some patterns or textures where they didn’t previously exist. A velvet, linen, or chunky knit throw can make things more inviting, and a simple swap from lighter to darker colors, for example, can make it all feel cozier.
Furniture Rearranging
Sometimes, simply shifting your furniture around can create a completely different energy. Reconfigure your seating areas, pop the couch into a new spot, and really try experimenting with different layouts. Bring in a friend to offer some outside perspective, as we tend to get stuck in how we think our homes are “supposed” to look…forever. In reorganizing, you’ll trick your brain into thinking it’s a whole new space (for a time, anyway). Kind of exciting.
Plant Life & New Pots
Houseplants are an ideal (and affordable) way to make your home feel freshed up and newly revamped. Even adding a couple of small plants like succulents can make a surprising difference. Create a little indoor herb garden on an available windowsill, re-pot some existing greenery in new pots, or add some hanging planters to a corner with ample light. A couple of wall-mounted shelves will also create some vertical green space.
