We’ve listed plenty of beautiful homes here at Homeworks, most of which have at least a few features that make us wish we were buying for ourselves. We’re suckers for things like formal foyers, arched doorways, transom windows, and wrap-around porches...and of course we love a good bit of curb appeal.
But one thing about buying and selling homes that we really love? Seeing the thoughtful, well-designed, and happily used backyards of our clients.
Salt Lakers have some pretty unparalleled access to stunning natural spaces (i.e. City Creek Canyon, Big or Little Cottonwood, Bonneville Trail Shoreline, etc.), but your own outdoor space is a pretty big deal too. As we see it, the term "backyard" isn't limited to any one definition—whether it's grass, garden, or gravel, the space behind your home should simply be a lovely alternative (whatever that means to you) for those days when you'd rather not venture out. Below are a handful of our favorites from homes we’ve listed over the last few years…
10957 E. Tanglewood Dr., FOR SALE
Listing Agent: Camilla Granåsen
What We Love: An actual cabin in the woods (see listing info/photos here), your backyard in this case is just some of Mother Nature’s best stuff. Quakies abound, which means fall time is certain to be perfect, and a small deck off the back of the cabin enables you to cozy up and take it all in. Best part? Residents here have private access to a small stream for cold plunges or dipping your toes. Heaven.
846 E. Garfield Ave., SOLD
Listing Agent: Leigh Anne Bernal
What We Love: A special backyard to say the least, this beautiful home on Garfield saw a renovation that left it sparkling from all sides. Out back, owners added a sizable deck that accommodates a dining table for 8 and lounge area. A gas fireplace was added, as well as a 15x15 finished storage shed that features a playroom/flex space above. Some grass and landscaping add to the charm, and it’s all accompanied by a small cottage allowing for a renter.
59 E. Hillside Ave., FOR SALE
Listing Agent: Zach Hansen
What We Love: Homes in the Capitol Hill neighborhood are hard to come by, so this one represents a special opportunity (see listing info/photos here). A complete renovation inside lends a distinctly modern feel, but the backyard is all charm and sunshine. A tiered and landscaped side- and backyard extend the sort of private and tranquil outdoor experience that is perfect for hosting, an afternoon of lounging, or evening of stargazing. The fountain and canopy of mature trees are a nice bonus, but the Capitol building is also kind of in your own backyard.
360 W. Broadway, #603, SOLD
Listing Agent: Keni Nelson
What We Love: Officially not a "backyard," since it isn't technically *behind* the property in question, but if a rooftop is all you've got, then that's your yard! This 400 sq. ft. private, rooftop deck belonged to a modern condo in the Broadway Park Lofts building, and we can't imagine a better spot for grilling up dinner and pouring some drinks while watching our city start to light up as the sun goes down.
243 Iowa Street, SOLD
Listing Agent: Monica Dennis
What We Love: This yard represents the best of both worlds, which is to say, the benefit of green space without the maintenance. That perfect grid of pavers is both satisfying and stunning, but we also love the wall of tall, narrow windows on the back of the home and the high planters with green spilling over. Ivy-covered shed, small fountain, plenty of space for the setup of your choice…we’re smitten.
2114 Scenic Dr., SOLD
Listing Agent: Camilla Granåsen
What We Love: This beautiful, contemporary home is one of our favorites for several reasons, but the backyard is particularly appealing. Decks on every level of the property offer stunning valley and sunset views atop a well-designed, fully landscaped yard with pavers, sitting areas, a veggie garden, mature trees, and a low-maintenance lawn. Outdoor haven, realized.
61 E. 1600 N. (Genola)., FOR SALE
Listing Agent: Zach Hansen
What We Love: This modern ranch-house in the country (see listing info/photos here) is surrounded by farmland and orchards, which makes it something of a default favorite for us. Around 2.5 acres of beautiful land includes an expansive, fenced backyard with plenty of room for play, and the covered patio means “dining out” can include the stars and sky. Makes you want to move to the country, doesn’t it?
1064 Hillview Dr., SOLD
Listing Agent: Melissa Lipani
What We Love: Our listing on Hillview tugged at our gardening heartstrings. Backed up to county-owned green space that abuts Big Cottonwood Regional Park, this nearly half-acre space includes wildflowers, raised garden beds, grapevines, and fruit trees. Private patio areas are scattered around the property, including a spacious sandstone patio with shady arbor for bird watching, stargazing, or taking in the beautiful Wasatch range. A dream for both pollinators and lovers of pollinators.
1354 E. Stratford Ave., SOLD
Listing Agent: Melissa Lipani
What We Love: Classic for a reason. Sometimes a simple backyard with a good bit of grass (for football, picnics, tag, or napping), a few well-placed garden boxes, a basketball hoop, and a thoughtful deck/patio area for gathering is all you really need. There’s space here for everyone, should a backyard party be in the cards, but it’s ultimately just a nice outdoor space for the activity of your choice. Enjoy.
